Kat's Corner



On a quiet street in downtown Pittsburgh, deep in the heart of the shopping district, there lies an unassuming store. Above the doors to the store, as with all of the other shops around it, there is a sign. “Dual Flame Outfitters,” the sign proclaims, clarifying in smaller text, “Handcrafted Weapons & Apparel.” As if to emphasize this point, a smaller sign hangs down beneath it, depicting a sewing needle and a hammer crossed in front of a flame.

The inside is comfortable, with wooden floors, high ceilings, and a couple of skylights set with stained glass that cast multicolored light across the contents of the store. Half of the large room is lined with colorful clothing and accessories, the other half with glinting weaponry. The two seem to mix in some areas, with chainmail accessories arrayed beside colorful weapon wraps and small wooden sculptures in bins by the counter.

Behind the counter sits an old woman, one of the proprietors of the store, humming to herself as she sews, knits, or crochets in the pauses between helping customers. From somewhere behind her, beyond the half door and curtain demarcating the employees only area, the faint ringing of a hammer against metal emerges, keeping time like an unorthodox clock.

The store itself seems normal enough, if a bit eccentric in its offerings. The woman tending the counter certainly seems to treat customers with the cheerful hospitality of any shopkeep. But there are whispers of a different side to the store. Rumors about how the light stays on long past dark, after the other shops on the lane have locked their doors and turned their cameras inwards. Rumors about cloaked figures, masked figures, people with strange silhouettes coming and going at odd hours.

The Seamstress does her best to fuel these rumors, saving pages in her sketchbook and room in her schedule for any metahumans who may require a more specialized outfit. She does love to see her designs out on the streets, be that fighting crime, causing it, or simply existing. And she’s well aware that the Blacksmith enjoys plying the new generation of combatants with blades and blunt objects, when she can be pried from her forge.

Alas, attitudes towards metahumans change with the tides of popular opinion, and so the rumors remain relatively quiet. For now. But with any luck, they’ll reach the right ears. The proprietors of Dual Flame are always willing to strike a deal with a young meta who needs equipment. They may even offer heavy discounts, for the assistance of young bodies in carrying reams of fabric or metal ingots. Neither of them are quite as young as they once were, and days and nights spent behind masks are long behind them.

The most normal girl in the world went for a walk on a completely normal day and did completely normal things. There were no strange occurrences. Why would there be strange occurrences? Psssh, Venus has never done anything weird, ever. Not even once. Why would you suggest that she did something strange? What do you know?!

“Oh, I wouldn't recommend ingesting strange chemicals.”




She may be crazy, but she is free. Horses neigh and run across the plains, and she is galloping alongside them in pursuit of the distant horizon and fields of golden oats. Or, no, she's just running across the rooftops, en route to help old ladies cross streets and stop purse snatchers with the help of awesome chemical concoctions. But that's just as fun!

Powers: Venus can manipulate the chemicals and associated reactions occurring within her body. She can fabricate or suppress naturally occurring chemicals like adrenaline and dopamine, and speed, slow, or stop reactions as they occur. For more complex effects and chemicals that aren’t naturally occurring, she relies on her knowledge of chemistry to craft chemical blends she can then ingest.

Once an external chemical enters her body she has full control over it. As such, she is immune to most poisons, diseases, and bacteria. Her body tends to default to canceling out anything external unless she makes an effort to allow it to happen, and returns to baseline functioning over time.

As a side effect of her powers, Venus has a fondness for the taste of chemicals, and a form of limited synesthesia that allows her to connect colors with tastes. She likes bright colors the best, and muddy ones the least. Naturally, she’s a big fan of color coding and tends to run a bit wild with highlighters whenever she has the chance.



EQUIPMENT​

  • Grappling Hook - every hero needs one! A length of sturdy wire and a vicious steel hook allow Griffonage to get onto rooftops in a matter of seconds, and aid in her swift journeying across the city. It’s amazing what one can find in one’s attic, isn’t it?
  • Mask - a domino mask over her eyes and a respirator over the lower half of her face help to conceal Griffonage’s secret identity. The respirator is easily detachable so that she can chug a potion on the go.
  • Hydrophobic Clothing - the thick cloth of Griffonage’s shirt and pants is coated in wax on the outside, for easier cleanup after slinging paint around on her missions.
  • Chemical Blends:
    • Foam Balloons - water balloons filled with a chemical blend that expands into a big cloud of purple foam upon impact. The foam is soft and pliant for a few moments before hardening into a dense, somewhat brittle shell. Tastes like grape-flavored cough medicine.
    • Hair Coating - a slippery black salve that bonds with hair much like conditioner. Used to disguise her hair color and discourage hair-grabbing. Stings a lot when contacting (other people’s) bare skin, and tends to drip.
    • Neutralizing Dust - gray powder kept in a pouch at her waist. Can be sprinkled onto any of the chemical blends to cancel them out/speed their deterioration.
  • Slingshot - a wooden slingshot with a sturdy rubber band that allows her to launch foam balloons from a distance.
