Time was starting to become meaningless to Sam. All there was, now, was the time before Todd had disappeared, and the time after. Ten days. It had been ten days. That didn’t mean that Sam could stop being Phoenix, however. In fact, it was even more important that she be Phoenix now that Cryptid was missing. That was why she was out on the streets, perched on top of a building, watching a group of men with guns trying to intimidate a pair of young women into giving them their purses.

It seemed the women were braver than the men with the guns, because they stood their ground in a way that made Phoenix smile behind her mask. A mask she was going to have to change soon, with her plans for a new suit. Still, it served her well for now, even as she felt the seam at her side start to tug uncomfortably. She knew she’d started putting on weight over the last month, but it had really only been maybe four to five pounds. The suit was probably just giving out after more than a decade of use.

She focused back in on the hold up down under her. One of the men was getting nervous, and he raised his gun to point it right in the young woman’s face. That was Phoenix’s cue. The fight was over before they even had a chance to consider fighting back. All three men, on the ground, taken down without her hammer ever having to leave its harness at her side. The two women looked at her with wide eyes, and she gave them a small salute with two fingers. With her voice deepened and rasping, she instructed them to leave and call the police, to give the address of the alleyway.

As the women quickly made their way out of the alley, Phoenix sighed and started to cuff the men with zipties. All in all, it had been a good “haul” over the last week, and it kept her from thinking too hard about Todd. She was eagerly waiting for Adelyn to get better, so they could look for him together. Any help was good help. But for now, this was what she could do. Some part of her, though, almost wished they had been more of a fight.

Maybe a good fight would fix her.
