He was feeling better now, that was good. As long as they kept this distance then things would be fine. It was always so hard to figure out the distance, everyone seemed to have such different reactions that she could never tell at what point they’d just look like a muppet or start melting from a fever. Eli knelt down next to the cashier, taking a moment to snag an alcohol wipe from below the counter to clean her hands before helping the guy peel his bloodied shirt away from the wound.

She half listened to the vigilante as she tore open a pack of absorbent pads and pressed one to the boy’s shoulder. “Yeah, it would be smart to stick together if there’s a third guy.” Eli said, winding gauze around his shoulder, pink slowly seeping through the white cloth. “Do you see anyone out there?” She asked, sliding her knife from her thigh to cut the gauze so she could tuck it into place.

Keep pressure on it, okay?” Eli said, softly. It wasn’t pretty, but a paramedic would probably be cutting it off soon anyway. The girl let out a sigh as her shoulders slumped.

I just wanted a bag of chips.” She groaned.

As soon as she disappeared to sit down next to the cashier, Todd put more of his weight against the doorframe. Breathing was helping, but the burn just wouldn’t stop. That was something he’d have to fix before he went home, even if it meant that he’d have to stop and eat on the way back.

After he dropped her off, he reminded himself. After he took care of her. He’d already offered.

He turned his face toward the window, forcing his breath to come out evenly. He scanned the gas station lot. It was a good thing it was well-lit, given his senses were on the fritz, or he wouldn’t’ve noticed the car without a pump attached to it.

“You might want to grab some and wait it out,” he reported, squinting into the dark at the car. Identifying the make and model was something to keep his mind off of things; he knew cars, after all. “I think I see their driver. Hard to say if he’ll make himself scarce when the cops get here, but there’s no way he didn’t hear the shooting. He’s probably waiting to see if somebody comes out.”

He pushed back up off the doorframe, and slipped his hands into his pockets. He unfocused from the car for a second to pull himself back together… and realized in his reflection that his eyes were blue, not black. A small muscle flex changed that, shifted his face back to the one he wore for patrols. He had to hope the teen hadn’t gotten close enough to notice, or would just write it off later as a trick of the light. It’d suck if his identity came out because of a fucking gas station robbery.

Which car? The red one?” Eli raised off her knees into a half crouch as she peeked out the window from behind the counter. There were not a lot of cars still outside at the pumps, which probably wasn’t surprising given the gunfire, so it didn’t take long to see the car that knife-man had noticed. It was a car, what type of car Eli very much didn’t know but it was a dark red color and she was pretty sure she had seen it pull in when she had entered the store.

Right. Okay.” Eli said, putting a hand on the counter to pull herself up to her feet. Or, well, that had been the plan before the blood caused her hand to slip and she awkwardly landed on her hip. Ouch.

Ah, should we call the cops then, you think? Let them know the cars there?” Eli asked, resting her forearms on her knees before more successfully pushing herself up to her feet. “Or, I think the cops will be here soon anyway.” The girl said, looking for something to wipe her hands with. The faint sound of sirens wailed in the distance.
