SECTION Nº2: OVERVIEW
I. DEPUTY DIRECTOR PUBLIC NOTES
- Special Agent Valerie Hawthorne was assigned to the Metahuman Behavioral Analysis Unit five years ago. We believe she remains unaware that this assignment is due to her powers, although we know she is somewhat aware of them. At the time of writing this, she still believes herself "cursed", due to the nature of her last three partners' retirements. We would prefer to keep it that way. Who knows what could happen if she became aware of the true nature of her powers.
In all other standards, Valerie is a model agent. She maintains exceptional scores on all tests and physicals, and she has a catch record of 95%. The other 5% were unpreventable deaths, although she has admitted she blames herself for those as well. I would say her major flaw is that she has a tendency to place heavy burdens on her own shoulders, regardless of whether it's been assigned to her or not.
She seems to work well with Benjamin, which is all we can really ask for given Benjamin appears to be the only other agent capable of surviving working with her. Additionally, Valerie seems well suited for the work the Metahuman Behavioral Analysis Unit does. However, I have garnered the distinct impression during my last interview with her that she would willingly follow Benjamin into fire. This could prove to be problematic if Benjamin were to ever leave the FBI, as we have no way of holding Valerie on staff if that were to happen. We must, at all costs, make sure she doesn't fall into anyone else's hands.

SECTION Nº3: CLASSIFIED ADDENDUM - EYES ONLY -
- "Miss Hawthorne, it's lovely to see you today."
"Right, it's lovely to see you too, Doctor."
"You seem on edge today. Does this have anything to do with–"
"Before you say that, can I say something?"
"Of course you can. This is a safe space for you to say anything you want. You know that the only thing I report is if you are fit for duty."
"Right. I loved her. I did. It's important to me that you know that I loved her."
"… You know, you can love someone, and still be happy they're gone, Val."
"I know. But it's really important to me that I say out loud to someone that I loved her. She was my mom. And even though we didn't get along, I still loved her. And she left me everything. It's going to take a while to sort through all of it, and I need to arrange the funeral, and–"
"Val. Tell me what's bothering you. Something's eating away at you. I can see it."
"I– I loved her. But I'm so glad she's gone."
"I understand. In one of our previous sessions, you told me she was the one who told you that you were cursed."
"I mean, she's right. I am cursed. Bad things happen to everyone around me, but still. She ruined my perception of myself. I'm still learning to love myself again. And she was so mean. About everything. I'm so glad that I never have to hear any of it again, any of the bitterness and the vicious comments about things being my fault even when I wasn't involved– does that make me a bad person?"
"No, Val. She was horrible to you. You can love someone and still be happy to never have to deal with them again. That makes you human. You know, I don't think you told me when the first time you remember her calling you a curse actually was. Can you recall?"
"It was when I was eleven–"
SECTION Nº4: TOP SECRET - EYES ONLY -
DISTRIBUTION OF THIS DOCUMENT IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE
- Special Agent Valerie Hawthorne-Analysis of Metahuman Ability
- Referred to as codename 'Hex,' Agent Hawthorn's Metahuman manifestation is complex and not understood. From what we've been able to extrapolate from multiple incidents and tests is the following: Agent Hawthorne generates a field around herself of an unknown perimeter, that alters "luck" in her favor. This could be things as simple as others having decreased luck in her vicinity, to things as complex as reality bending events. Several of the tests we have run and documented are listed in this file.
- Incident F-7, 06-14-16, 7:28 PM. Agent Hawthorne was sent into the field with Agent Ruthers, who had a mission to plant an explosive with the intent to use it on Agent Hawthorne. They were sent into a warehouse used for a steel company after two suspects in a bombing incident.
7:32 PM Agent Ruthers separated from Agent Hawthorne, who went up on the catwalk to "get a better view" of the warehouse. Agent Ruthers began to set the explosive.
7:38 PM Agent Hawthorne bumped into the control panel for the equipment, pressing the release button for the claw arm of the machine. The machine was off and had been without power for several days.
7:39 PM The claw of the machine opened, dropping several steel beams down on Agent Ruthers, crushing his left leg, three of his ribs, as well as the detonator and the explosive device. Caught in the collapse were also the two suspects, both trapped under the beams and unable to escape.
06-15-16, 2:50 PM The explosive device was examined after being retrieved from the site, and it was determined that the device had a critical short that would have prevented it from detonating in the event it was triggered.
- Incident F-12, [FILE REDACTED]
- Incident F-15, 02-21-17, 9:30 AM. Agent Hawthorne was sent in as part of a strike force on a terrorist cell. All accounts are told from first-hand accounts, as all body cams immediately failed upon entering the field of the metahuman present in the building.
9:32 AM Agent Hawthorne was fired upon by two assailants. All bullets reflected off a nearby beam that she had peaked out from behind, and the ricocheted bullets killed both assailants. The team proceeded forward.
[FILE REDACTED]
9:40 AM Agent Hawthorne and her team lead were separated from their support, and the two of them continued on ahead while the rest engaged in fire exchange with the terrorist cell.
9:45 AM Agent Hawthorne and her team lead encountered the metahuman in the facility, disarming them through what appeared to be sheer luck on Agent Hawthorne's part in a move that should have gotten her shot. The metahuman's gun jammed. She disabled the combatant and the two continued on.
[FILE REDACTED]
[FILE REDACTED]
10:05 AM Agent Hawthorne and her team lead returned to the support team, the terrorist cell leader in custody. He had suffered a concussion and several GSWs to the shoulder. The team lead had suffered several scrapes from the aforementioned rescue of Agent Hawthorne.
10:20 AM All members of the strike team survived the mission, and many claim its thanks to Agent Hawthorne's original actions upon entering the facility that they were able to survive and get the drop on the cell. As we have no footage of the events, we cannot confirm whether these incredulous events actually occured. The team lead Agent Gunner Hershaw confirmed they were accurate, and as such, we have chosen to document them as such.
