Andrew Morgenstern has always been a complete medical anomaly. First, there’s the complex polymelia – the presence of extra limbs. In total, Drew has two additional pairs of arms and three pairs of vestigial, feathered wings. These are especially peculiar in that Andrew can retract these additional limbs, or extend them at will. When retracted, his extra arms fold into marsupial pockets along his rib cage, forming additional padding around his vital organs. His ribs shift to allow for this, and he has other, unnamed bones giving additional structure to the sides of his body. He also has additional shoulder blades all down his back, shielding his spine. His vestigial wings fold in over these when retracted. This retractable feature gives him a strange sort of natural armor
These limbs are actually loosely set in their respective joints, and are easy – if painful – for Drew to remove if they become seriously damaged. If any of his limbs are removed, Andrew can fully re-grow them in the span of about 6 weeks; they will be functional, if unattractive, by week three.
Drew’s bones aren’t hollow in the sense that a bird’s are. His wings are not designed for flight. Rather, they, and all his arms, include a hollow section through which air can be funneled to create a white-noise sound with hypnotic properties. One minute of uninterrupted exposure to this sound can put a person to sleep for one hour after the sound ends when his limbs are retracted; with each pair of limbs exposed, he can affect an additional person within hearing range, up to a maximum of 6 people.
Drew does not have facial eyes. The skin is completely grown over where they should be. Instead, he has 9 functional eyes on each shoulder – with only a transparent nictitating membrane for cover. These eyes are various sizes, but are present around his shoulders, essentially giving him a nearly 360 degree field of vision if he leaves them bare. He also has an eye on each of his 6 palms, with true eyelids as well as the tertiary; these eyes become functional at three weeks into the regrowth process if a limb is removed. These more obvious eyes are covered by black fingerless gloves to hide them. Between these and his day-to-day clothing choices, he is effectively blind most of the time, and the eyes are highly sensitive to bright light.
