Greetings fellow wanderers of this box in space! I've got a special treat for you today. Let's hop right in, shall we?
Androids have been going missing. It's not very well known, because no one wants to cause a panic, but there are whispers in certain circles. Neighbors letting messages pile up, beloved robo-pets not coming back for maintenance or cuddles, it all paints a suspicious picture.
Curiosity doesn't pay it much mind until one of their main customers doesn't show up to pick up his robotic bird after its repairs are done. They know how much the man cares for his bird, if the giant list of care instructions is anything to go off of, and so they decide to investigate. But of course, they can't go on their own! That's a one-way ticket to wherever everybody (everyboty) got taken.
Welcome to the spacebox - your open-universe adventure! This is an RP with a lot of flexibility built in, designed to be an enjoyable space-type experience. It’s also designed a bit as a haven for some of those great ideas you had for an RP that didn’t work out - sometimes a new setting can give them some life. Ideally, Spacebox will draw a lot of people together and many shenanigans can ensue.
There won’t be a plot that you must be involved in, but I will run some events that people can get into. I’ll be putting up something for people to start getting involved with once we get a few CSes.
Can I be an established race (Vulcans, Jawas, Dark Eldar, etc)? Sadly, no. Original content only here, please. You can, however, create your own race that draws heavily from something from a book or movie or game. Just make sure to give it a little touch of your own.
Can I be a member of someone else’s OC alien race? With their permission, yeah.
Can I be a cyborg? Yeah.
Can I be an alien cyborg? Yeah.
Can I have a giant mech? Yeah.
Can I have a spaceship? Yeah.
Can I be a spaceship? Yeah.
Can I have more than one spaceship? Not at the same time and place. I’m drawing the line there - no fleet battles yet.
Can I have more than one character? Yeah.
Can I re-use a character from another RP? Yeah.
Is this basically Superhero Sandbox Space Edition? ...What gave you that idea?
1. Site rules apply. I mean... we all knew that, right? I don’t want to read your asteroid x supernova (super hot!!!) erotica. Keep it PG-13, be respectful, all the usual.
2. Play fair. If you’re going to fight, no auto-hits (my character punched yours in the face - without giving the opposing writer a chance to evade or defend), no god-moding (my character wins by the power of being powerful and is so powerful that anything you do is powerless because I am powerful), don’t no-sell (nothing you do will ever affect my character). No one has to fight if they don’t want to; ask to engage.
3. Original content only - that was mentioned above, but you need to be your own character, your own race, your own tech. You can certainly draw inspiration from other sources, but make an effort to put your own creative spin on it.
4. Ask permission before tying in to anyone else’s lore. Maybe you want your space empire and someone else’s space empire to have been at war - just ask them first and make sure it’s okay with them! Make sure you read “Human Lore” if you want to play a human character.
5. Character bios must be on the CS thread before you can post with a character in one of the RP threads.
6. Posts should be in the "intermediate-to-advanced" length. No, you don't have to write six pages, but do try for at least a paragraph or two.
RP Threads? Yeah!
So, like Sandbox, there will be multiple and you can hit up anyone for an interaction. We’ll have a channel in RPF-discord and an OC forum for getting interactions together. Just preface them with [Spacebox] - so it’s something like [Spacebox] Aliens Stole My Pet Rock [Limited].
Threads can be [Open] - anyone can join, [Closed] - only the invited parties can join, [Limited] - there are restrictions on who can join, like maybe “up to 3 people” or “scientists only” or “open for 2 weeks, then closed.” The person creating the thread decides. [Semi-Open] is another tag you’ll see, and pretty much means the same as [Limited].
Location threads are usually considered [Open] unless otherwise specified, but please be polite - if there’s already a scene going on there, don’t start another one so people have to read every other post. You can have an interaction at a place that’s not taking place on the [Location] thread itself. These are good for things like planets and space bases. “Starport Iota” is a good introductory location thread to get started in.
So, while I have tried not to define too much of the world, humanity needs to be defined at least somewhat. The year is The Future, humans are not exactly sure how far in the future it is from now because there was an Intergalactic Oops that wiped out most records of Earth during their exodus period. It’s probably around the year 4000 or 5000.
Humanity has left Earth and forged their way into the stars, and being humans, promptly decided that they couldn’t stand each other, and have divided themselves up into little pockets of humanity everywhere (look, see, this way you can design your own human world!)
They are, in fact, generally agreed to be the original builders of Starport Iota. A few other human starports remain scattered throughout the galaxy, many of them in ruins. Why did Iota thrive when the others didn’t? Oh, look, another space for more lore to develop!
Whatever else humans have become, they don’t know a whole lot about their origins. They know they came from Earth, and they’re pretty sure they know which ruined hunk of rock used to be earth - that is, rocks, plural. It’s split apart now. No one’s really sure how that happened. At some point early in the human exodus from Earth, there was some sort of glitch that wiped out most of their records. Since it didn’t wipe out the humans, they’ve just sort of moved on. Resilient little critters, aren’t they?
This section will be updated with more human lore as it gets added.
Starport Iota - Astral Crossroads Humans built it, but even they aren’t really sure how. Maybe they had help, maybe it was a single rogue genius, maybe everything was just better in the good old days. Either way, Starport Iota has been thriving for over 700 years. Time there is measured in standard Earth-years, because humans are stubborn like that.
The starport is at an intergalactic crossroads, right near the exits of some pretty major wormholes. Not all space civilizations use wormholes for travel - there are many other methods available - but some of them do, and the starport makes use of its junction to act as a center for trade and commerce and politics and whatever else people get up to.
The rules are simple: Don’t harm the station, and act in accordance with the area. There are plenty of places on Starport Iota where peoples can settle their differences with as much violence as they want, but doing so in the major shopping areas might end up with sanctions, and no one wants sanctions. The general agreement of these policies makes Starport Iota a hub for diplomacy, since if one is careful about where they go, they can be reasonably assured that they won’t be assassinated - at least, not until they leave.
The station is extremely resilient - and indeed, it manages to rebuild itself and even add on to itself - but it’s still not a good idea to do anything that will end up breaking any large part of the station itself, because that will result in sanctions and possibly expulsion. Orbital platforms exist for those who want to punch each other hard enough to destroy them. The platforms are made up mostly of compacted garbage, so letting them get destroyed in high-level content is just part of Starport Iota’s environmentally friendly recycling program.
No one knows everything about the Starport - even after 700 years, there are new things still being discovered. How and why that happens is one of the universe’s great mysteries.
Aside: While I’m happy to have people contributing to Human Lore, Starport Iota is my baby and I have some ideas for it, so please don’t write lore about the Starport without asking.
This is not me but how I look like you, but this is not you this is me.
I do not have a name I am just rolling cosmos a blade of stars. So some call me Roller Blade. Or a variation of, like Ollie or Blade.
My hair is not hair it is the night. My eyes are not eyes just a glow of white.
I am not tall, because this is not me but compared to you my height is average I suppose.
I weigh two. Two what you ask? The average weight of two people I guess?
I am not a race I am a place. But for now this is my face.
So what is it I do? Why do I do it? I shall try and explain.
I do not sleep, but I dream of returning home. Because as I said what you see isn't me. I'm just a fragmentation of a whole on the edge of space I was removed from. Sorry, some time ago a race took matter from a corner of the Galaxy. They kid napped the aether and I am the sum of that rolling mass. I don't need much but what I crave is matter. By taking in matter I can recover this form but more importantly as the matter comes into this body I gain clarity in where I need to go, which is home. Because I am not me I am a place.
So I can on touch disintegrate stuff with a concentrated touch or when harmed? Sure that is a decent summary.
I wouldn't say I'm particularly strong I'm just metal. I suppose though if one metal was tougher then the other I'd be a parallel to that? So I kind of hit harder then some and can take more but I wouldn't say it matters. Because this body isn't me, im not a face I'm place I need to return to that space.
So what about the sword you say? Well that's not something drawn its me, but this isn't me it's what I'm stuck with letting you see. You understand yes? Right so to continue the sword burns hot like a star like what I should be orbiting because I don't belong here I am a place.
So now that you understand what I am we shall uncover why, which had been touched on but should be continued.
As stated I am a shard, a blade taken from the rolling cosmos. I need to take matter so I know how to go home because I am a place not this face. I am lost, so why did they take me.
Well they would tell you it was because I was a danger. Or that I was endangered. It was some time ago and people have different opinions. This was also so long ago those faces have been returned to the dirt. Those faces are now places like I should be. I was me from the beginning, but the me you see has only been coherent sense some hundred years ago? Apologies it's hard to express time days are different on planets depending on cycles. I also can't recall my age because that would be tethered to the place I am but am apart from...
"I'm space, a sword of a place given a face so that toward home I can race."
Name: Curiosity Species: Android* - humanoid version Pronouns: they/them, she/her, he/him (collects pronouns like candy or shiny coins) Age: ~100 Sexuality: Sounds Tasty
(They have a gray chassis and blue wiring in their exposed joints. Their hair is made of braided steel, and is retractable, so they can make it any length they choose. Their wiring and hair glow in the dark thanks to a special blue phosphorescent paint. They also have built-in heelies, for ease of transportation. Though they sometimes dress up in clothes from other cultures they usually don't bother draping fabric over themself, as there is nothing they would wish to cover or hide.)
Occupation: Engineer/Researcher - specializes in repairing drones and other androids, and runs their own repair/tinkering shop on Starport Iota. It’s a bit out of the way, so they don’t have too many customers but they do have a few regulars and business isn’t bad. When not occupied with repairs, they enjoy traveling the station and researching other species, as a kind of hobby.
Weapon: Can produce electricity and flame through the tips of their “fingers,” which is usually used for repairs but can also be used for combat purposes. They also carry a small, heavily modified laser pistol of their own design which is capable of shooting blasts of electricity and flame, alongside the typical lasers. The electricity and laser settings are usually set to stun, as they’re more likely to talk their way through conflict than actually hurt someone.
Companion Drone: Laika - named after the first dog in space from the human civilization, Laika is a drone that Curiosity discovered one day while exploring. It was heavily damaged, but its memory core was intact and so they rebuilt it. Its "hands" are interchangeable with various tools, and have a magnetic field that allows it to pick up small objects as needed. (The dog ears and mask weren't strictly necessary, but they were on a bit of a human civilization kick that day, so they fashioned them out of plastic as accessories.) It doesn't talk, but it does help with their repairs and occasionally submits to headpats, so they consider it a friend.
Personality: Their name says it all, really. They're incredibly curious about how things tick, and they love, above everything else, to learn. They're fascinated most of all by all of the different cultures and creatures in the galaxy, and if there's an opportunity to observe a new one you can bet that they'll take it. As of now, they haven't quite grasped the concept that other races can be "injured" and "age," but they're working towards that.
*Species Lore: Androids come in all shapes and sizes, having been modeled after and/or created by inventors and engineers of various species, with varying rates of success. For this reason, it is difficult to pin one definition on an "Android," and it is generally best to ask first lest you accidentally offend a cyborg or a particularly metallic race. Androids can have more robotic appearances or blend in nearly seamlessly with non-Android races, but generally speaking they are entirely synthetic beings with artificial intelligence housed in a "memory core" kept somewhere on their being. As such, they don't physically age and it is difficult to accidentally injure a well-built android, though they can be killed if their memory core is destroyed.
